THE ART OF THE ANATOLIAN KILIM

Here’s another one of the smaller exhibitions at the De Young that is nice to see if you have an appreciation for textiles.  Some of the pieces are SO old that they are literally in tatters and holding on by threads.  And some of the patterns are SO old that they don’t have any idea of it’s origin or meaning.  The designs look extremely Native American and not what we think of as Turkish at all.  Although I’m definitely no expert on kilims.  I found them all really beautiful, and some very contemporary even.  The show runs through July 29, 2012.  Here’s a brief excerpt from the museum’s press release:

ARTHUR TRESS: SAN FRANCISCO 1964

Last week when I was at the De Young for the JP Gaultier exhibition, we stopped to see a couple of smaller temporary exhibits currently on show.  One was a charming photographic exhibition of Arthur Tress’s photos from 1964.  The black and white photos are a documentary of the city in a period of political and cultural change.  What was remarkable is that San Francisco is unrecognizable.  There are no big landmarks or tourist shots, which made it more interesting and intimate, but foreign – I guess unless you were there at the time.  I snapped a couple of shots of what the economy was like in those days – 54 cents for dry cleaning and 35 cents an hour for parking!  What a steal!  And below is the most humorous – a photo of a woman at Coit Tower.   (This photo taken from the De Young website, mine didn’t come out as good)

THE FASHION WORLD OF JP GAULTIER – Part 1

My friend Zoe was in town this Thursday so we decided to go catch the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibition: ‘From The Sidewalk To The Catwalk’ running at the De Young Museum through August 19th, 2012.  Prior to going into the museum there was a couple with a little girl whom they posed in front of the show’s sign with a scarf wrapped around her head.  With their permission, I snapped this picture below.  I thought it was pretty hilarious.  Now that’s some fashionista styling work…haha.
